The easiest way to reduce on-line hate is to report posts and comments to the social media platform, and you can do that from home without confronting people. This slideshow gives you step by step directions and tips to do just that. For resources on how to intervene directly with people, see the resources section on Hatewatch. New & Improved

Because social media (SM) is the new tool for radicalization and its efficiency in doing just that, the easiest thing you can do is also the most effective: REPORT POST TO SM PLATFORM. If you already know how to report, then skip to the who/what section following.

How to report post to SM platform.

This focuses on Facebook, other platforms will be added later. Be sure to screenshot posts of concern for two reasons: (1) if that person has repeated, escalating posts then you’ll want a history of those to submit to law enforcement when it reaches that level and/or (2) if you decide to submit the post to KURW or a different content related Hatewatch. Please black out your name and profile image because as careful as we are to protect non-public identities, errors occur.

Who/What to Begin

Of course, report things as you see them among your FB friends and groups. If you don’t have any, then you can use two sources from KURW to begin:

  1. The table is from an earlier post Understanding Social Media in Kanab: Groups, Pages & Individuals and is a good start because the people/pages with most potential to influence based on followers are sorted (unlike Hatewatch). For the followers, you can use the search feature on pages/groups to find their comments more easily.

I resided in the Kanab, Utah area from 2009 throughout 2020. I created KURW following the January 6, 2021 attempt by domestic extremists to stop the certification of the election which nearly a dozen Kanab area residents participated and were encouraged by the Kanab City Police Chief & fellow law enforcement. I resided most of my life in rural America and was raised in a large, far-right family. Studies show new trends in extremist characteristics, feelings of fear/anger/betrayal, an increase in social media recruitment and incitement, and radicalization as quickly as six months. Concerned residents of the area had collected evidence of public activity beginning with the six months of weekly Black Lives Matter and All Lives Matter and MAGA events in Kanab. That documentation, public posts on social media, contribution from community members and outside organizations were compiled to create KURW Hatewatch because I feel like that is the best way that I can address the call for awareness to the threat of extremism.
