Meet Your Kanab City Council 2024

Beginning January 2024, Kanab City Council will include three people who publicly promoted that the 2021 election was fraudulent/stolen and two of those support their neighbors who went to Washington DC on January 6, 2021 to stop the certification of the election (see KURW post Insurrectionists from Kanab Area).

Both of the vacated Kanab City Council positions were filled residents on KURW Hatewatch for their public engagement in extremism and bigotry, Peter Banks & Boyd Corry. Both are Kanab business owners and join the Mayor Colten Johnson, in his support of Kanab J6ers. The city mayor appoints the police chief, Tom Cram, who also supports Kanab J6ers. Both Chief Cram & Mayor Johnson are designated Red Level Neighbors for their excessive extremism and/or bigotry. (To see evidence by other law enforcement and school staff see previous KURW posts: Kanab City Police Department and Public School Employees. Kane County School District).

This shift to electing public officials who publicly promote/support extremism and bigotry is also reflected at the county level. In 2022, Kane County elected two women affiliated with with the extremist group Kanab Patriots just after the previous Commissioners identified Kanab Patriots as a “hate group” (see KURW post Kane County Commissioner Calls Kanab Patriots a Hate Group, But They Are Not the Fringe).

The table below indicates if there is evidence for public engagement for some of the hatewatch categories for each of the Kanab City elected officials & support staff. A “Yes” indicates that there is evidence and the minus/dash ” – ” indicates that there is no evidence. To see that evidence scroll to the Google Slideshow following this table.

Google Slideshow of the evidence of extremism and/or bigotry publicly shared by the 2024 Kanab City Council and support staff.

How evidence is gathered and displayed

The evidence is gathered from public posts on social media, public engagement at rallies/events, and legal information that is accessible to the public. In other words, no private information is used and evidence IS SIMPLY COPIED from the source posting the public evidence.

The evidence is presented in a Google Slideshow format categorized by topic instead of a collection of the screenshots of the evidence for three reasons (1) the categorized format reveals the magnitude of the hate for given topics so that people can better address that individual for targeted intervention (2) the screenshot format of the post can lead to an amplification of hate by others simply sharing that post and (3) the Google Presentation format allows for links to other sources while a screenshot does not.

Here are examples of how the summarized version on Google Slideshows (left side of image) are based directly from the screenshots of evidence (right side of image). In both examples the January 6th attack on the US Capitol is supported by Kanab Mayor CJ Johnson (top image) and Kanab Chief of Police Tom Cram (bottom image).

As always, see KURW post Reforming Extremists on Hatewatch for tips for conversations to reduce bigotry & extremism and email mgalaria@protonmail.com for corrections to this post.

I resided in the Kanab, Utah area from 2009 throughout 2020. I created KURW following the January 6, 2021 attempt by domestic extremists to stop the certification of the election which nearly a dozen Kanab area residents participated and were encouraged by the Kanab City Police Chief & fellow law enforcement. I resided most of my life in rural America and was raised in a large, far-right family. Studies show new trends in extremist characteristics, feelings of fear/anger/betrayal, an increase in social media recruitment and incitement, and radicalization as quickly as six months. Concerned residents of the area had collected evidence of public activity beginning with the six months of weekly Black Lives Matter and All Lives Matter and MAGA events in Kanab. That documentation, public posts on social media, contribution from community members and outside organizations were compiled to create KURW Hatewatch because I feel like that is the best way that I can address the call for awareness to the threat of extremism.
